When are the best times of year to go to Walt Disney World?
WHEN you choose to visit can make a substantial difference! Its not as big a difference as it used to be, as Disney has done a lot of work on spreading attendance across the year. They put special events, parties, festivals and promotions to fill up the hotels and parks during the traditional off season, making the slow seasons not as slow as they once were. That said, paying attention to dates is still worth it. Even if you have very limited times you can go, choosing the best possible options for arrival and departure date might reduce the average attendance across your trip by 10% or more if you can just avoid one super busy day, and thats absolutely worth it.
The BEST times to go to Walt Disney World are:
- During special events that interest you. Bear in mind that events held on major holidays usually attract significant crowds, however.

In short, dont waste your money.
Avoid Visiting During Busy Holidays
If at all possible, avoid visiting the Walt Disney World Resort during busy holidays. Holidays tend to draw in larger crowds since children are out of school. There are certain holidays that draw in larger crowds than others.
First and foremost, do NOT plan a visit to Disney World the week between Christmas and New Years Day. Trust me, you do not want to try and brave the crowds during this particular week. Historically, this is the busiest week of the year as thousands of people give the gift of a Disney vacation to their children for Christmas. If you want to give Disney as a Christmas gift, consider waiting until after New Years before arriving. You will be so much happier you waited.
So, what are the crowds typically like over the holidays?
Disney Marathon Weekends will draw in larger crowds than normal. The Walt Disney World Marathon is held each year in January and the Princess Half Marathon is held in February.

Disney Worlds 2018 resort hotel prices were released on June 20.
The prices that came out June 20 were a bit of a mess, particularly for January 2018, and have changed several times sincesee the Art of Animation example :
They seem to have stabilized, however, so Ive been analyzing a sample of resorts, and the upshot is that compared to the quite restrained price increases we saw in 2017, prices are up substantially in mostthough not allresorts in 2018.
Only Caribbean Beach and Grand Floridian see very small price increases for 2018. 2018 Value resort prices are up 6-9% 2018 moderate resort prices are up 5-7% and 2018 deluxe prices are up 5-7%.
The other thing thats new for 2018 is more distinctions among day prices in the same price seasons. For many major seasons, youll see new Thursday prices, and in the moderates and values some new Sunday prices as well.
Analyzing Disney resort price changes is difficulttheres more than 20 hotels, many differently-priced room and view types within them, seven to nine different major price seasons over the course of the year, additional weekend and holiday upcharges, and more. As a result, unless you have a LOT of time on your hands you need to sample, and thats what Ive done.
In general, I gather daily price data on the lowest and next-highest priced rooms at all of the resorts , and then analyze:

Disney World Deluxe Resorts Pricing In 2018
Price season structure
The deluxe resorts run to a different price season calendar than the values and moderates, especially from early July through mid-November.
Their 2018 price season calendar is similar to that of 2017, with the main change being the addition of a few more days of Peak season pricing the week after the Easter season.
The deluxes also see in 2018 the added complexity in day-by-day prices as the values and moderates, but not so muchonly for three seasons , not four, and typically only for Thursday nights, not the Sundays and Thursdays of the other resort classes.
Price level changes
Theres a bewildering plethora of price points at the deluxesmany view options, with Club service options as well. I sampled the full set of price changes in eighteen deluxe room types, and based on that saw no material changes among the overall resort price standings.
The Grand Floridian is still the most expensive, and standard rooms at the Wilderness Lodge are still largely the least expensive .
Season price increases
After restrained price increases in 2017, most deluxe rooms are up 5-7% for 2018, with the exception being the Grand Floridian, which for the second year in a row has seen next to no increases.
Grand Floridian standard view rooms had an average increase of 1.3% in 2017, and in 2018 have no increase. Two other view types I checked also had no increase for 2018.
Why Crowds Calendars Arent Always 100% Correct
As great as a good Disney World Crowd Calendar can be, it is not the end-all-be-all to Disney vacation planning. Dont think you can just pick a time when the calendar tells you the parks should have fewer people and think thats all you need to do to have a successful Disney trip. Crowd calendars are just one part of the planning.
You cant count on them 100% as there are just too many variables that can change at a moments notice. Last year, everyone thought that the crowds for Star Wars: Galaxys Edge would be off the charts in Disneyland and Disney World and there would be lines outside the parks all day. It turns out that was completely wrong advice and the resorts on both coasts had the lightest Summer attendance maybe ever.
The weather can turn a park from heavy crowds to empty in a matter of days. Whenever there are hurricanes in Disney World, the parks turn into a ghost town for days before and after the storm hits. You cant predict the weather and you have to go with the flow.
Then theres what happened in 2020 with parks closing and guests having to reschedule for a future date or completely cancel their vacations due to economic hardship. 2020 was on pace for one of the busiest years in Disney World in recent memory, and things changed overnight and it became the year with the lightest crowds ever once the parks reopened.

Disney World Special Events 2021
Special events can greatly influence crowd levels in Disney World and a lot of people come out to the parks when there is something new going on. Some of these can include the EPCOT festivals, new attractions, runDisney races, hard-ticketed events like Mickeys Not So Scary Halloween Party or Mickeys Very Merry Christmas Party.
Even youth sporting events like dance or cheerleading competitions have a big effect on how many people are visiting the parks during a given week.
Here is a look at all the Disney World events in 2021 that will have an effect on the crowd levels:
- Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend: *Canceled
- EPCOT International Festival of the Arts: Jan 17th Feb 24
- Pro Bowl Weekend: Jan 29-31
- Dance Competitions: *Canceled
- EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival: July 15 Nov 20
- Disney After Hours Boo Bash: Aug 10 Oct 31
- Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend: Nov 4-7
- Disney Very Merriest After Hours: Nov 8 Dec 21
- EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays: Nov 26 Dec 30
Quite a few of the usual Dinsey World events were canceled in the first half of 2021 such as the marathons, and the cheerleading and dance competitions. Thankfully, most of the other big events were saved and will continue as normal or as modified versions of the regular events.
Factors That Influence The Best Time To Go To Disneyland
When is the Disney World "Off Season"?
If youre more familiar with Cinderella Castle than Sleeping Beauty Castle, it's important to know that the best time to visit Disneyland isn't the same as at Disney World. The biggest difference is the locals. Disney World has a good amount of locals, but not nearly as many as those in the Los Angeles/Orange County area. Many of those Disneyland locals were annual passholders.
One of the biggest changes to occur during the Disneyland closure was the cancellation of all annual passes. That means that during the Disneyland reopening period, all guests will have to purchase tickets. That may change the way even locals visit the parks. For some time, the annual passholders have thought of the Happiest Place on Earth as their second home. In other words, they would pop in for a few hours here or there maybe on a weekday, or on a spring or fall Sunday morning before heading to the beach assuming their pass wasn't blocked out. They'd hop in on Friday nights to catch fireworks and meet up with friends for some of their favorite Disneyland snacks.
A more recent crowd forecaster is Disneyland's 1-Day Ticket Availablity Calendar. Disneyland's 1-Day tickets are sold in tiers based on projected crowd levels, giving us a sneak peek at when Disney is expecting things to be busiest. Keep hopping back for updates on the annual passholder situation, because knowing their patterns can help you plan your trip.

Expected Busiest Days At Disneyland In 2022
- MLK Jr. Day – Jan. 14-17, 2022
- Presidents' Day – Feb. 18-21, 2022
- Spring break and Easter – March 13 to April 17, 2022
- Weekends and Grad Nite dates in May
- The week of Thanksgiving – Nov. 19-28, 2022
- Christmas week through the second week of the New Year – Dec. 17, 2022 – Jan. 8, 2023
*The fall of Easter impacts Disneyland crowds in the spring. Some school districts base their spring break around Easter others do not. When Easter falls earlier in the season, March or early April, it has the effect of making a more intense, but shorter spring break season. When Easter falls later, as it does in 2022, the effect is a longer but less intense spring break season. Many California universities consistently have spring break at the end of March, which can affect crowds then.
